Day 12 - Mountains return

Day 12 finds our travellers heading for a traditional
Japanese breakfast in the hotel …. Verdict…. Nothing to write home about. 

Next up we head to a tour of the Mt Fuji area and some classic Japanese scenery 

Now organised tours in Japan all seem to have one thing in common no matter what they involve they always seem to involve a shrine/ temple. The first one or two are interesting but after that…. Well let’s just say our travellers patience / interest starts to wain!

What is surprising about a


lot of these holy places and in reality about most of Japan ….. it’s in need of refurbishment. It appears to your travellers eyes that Japan, the gem of 1980’s technological success perhaps hasn’t had such a successful time since then. Evidence of this is everywhere but perhaps most clearly in the metro / rail system where the ticket machines look very dated and tap and go doesn’t exist! Further evidence should any be needed exists with the taxis….. most wouldn’t be out of place in India such is their vintage! 

Having said all of that the place is very clean, despite there being no waste bins in the street (people just take their rubbish home!). 

Today your travellers experience….. mt Fuji with temples (of course), very nice exotic ice cream at what resembled a garden centre (we were assured by our guide that it wasn’t!), a speed boat trip on one of the mt Fuji lakes and a traditional Japanese meal of waygu beef and noodles which was appreciated despite two of our party moaning constantly about not being able to sit on the floor!

With rock n roll years behind us our band take to their beds ahead of another busy moving day tomorrow…

Day 3 - Deja vu…. Almost!

Day 3 dawns with your scribe waking at 5am to catch the Liverpool v Utd game via the wonders of t’nternet and some magic known as a vpn. What a start to the day as the most admired, respected and yes adored team in England saw off their main imposters with quality to spare (oh so maybe just a touch of bias there but hopefully dear readers will forgive your humble scribe just a fleeting moment of hope for yet another dawn from the near pitch black nightmare of supporting Utd over the last 10 years.  Football result dealt with check! A further car nap check, then it up for a day of sights in Christchurch. Now in reality Christchurch whilst a fantastic little city is overly endowed with things to see and do, so having scoured viator and get my guide (other brands are available) of most senior member declares it would be nice to go for a gondola, tram and punt ride.  And so it is that full of exploration spirit our trio head to the gondola suitably reinforced by toast and Vegemite...

Day 2 - spot the glacier

 As day dawns you find your scribe trying to work out what day it is (oh what happened to that brief visit of wisdom?!), flying to the opposite side of the world certainly scrambles just about everything! Through some madness your travellers thought it wise to follow up the previous 2 days of travelling and time scrambling with a monster excursion to mount cook (the highest mountain in Australasia) so wearily they walk from the hotel under the guidance of our senior member (now those of you familiar with previous trips may recall how dangerous this can be!). With some minor route correction en route arrival on time for pick up is achieved.  This trip is a small group tour of mount cook and various lakes…. Small group turns out to be our weary band plus one other, can’t complain at that! Wow.. what scenery! New Zealand dear reader has to be one of if not the most beautiful counties in the world!
